This month we are pleased to welcome Ellen Viste, writer in residence

Ellen Viste in front of Hiorthfjettet, March 2024

Ellen Viste lives in Bergen, where she works as a communication adviser at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. Having a background as a meteorologist and climate researcher, she has also worked extensively with popular science writing on weather and climate.

In 2023 she published the book Tales of the wind (Kolombia / Bonnier Norsk Forlag; in Norwegian). She holds a PhD in tropical meteorology from the University of Bergen, previously having studied there and at UNIS in Longyearbyen. Her Master thesis was about the distribution of precipitation on the glacier Austre Brøggerbreen, near Ny-Ålesund.

On Svalbard she will explore the topic of temperature and how humans have adapted to life outside the tropics. Viste has been nominated by our key partner Norsk Faglitterær Forfatter og Oversetterforening (NFFO) and will be staying in Longyearbyen until April.

You can find out more about all the up-coming residents here.
