Hvordan er det for ungdom å bo i Longyearbyen når så mange flytter til og fra?
Ragnhild Bjørnsen har de siste tre årene hatt et forskningsprosjekt der hun ser nærmere på hvordan til- og fraflytting påvirker ungdom i Longyearbyen. Denne kvelden vil hun presentere noen av resultatene fra sitt prosjekt. Hun ønsker innspill på sitt arbeid og en god samtale rundt temaer som vennskap, tilhørighet, inkludering og utenforskap.
Ragnhild er førsteamanuensis ved Universitetet i Innlandet. Hun har tidligere forsket på oppvekst blant barn og unge som flytter mye, blant annet diplomatbarn.
I 2022 ble hun kontaktet av en som har jobbet med ungdom i Longyearbyen, og som fortalte om hvordan ungdommene her opplever at ‘mange kommer og går’. Siden da har hun vært her fire ganger, og prosjektet har utviklet seg. Ungdommer på ungdomsskolen og videregående har skrevet tekster om sine liv. Hvilke erfaringer forteller de om? Hvilke tanker har de om dette? Hvordan ser vennskap ut bant ungdom i en liten by med høy gjennomstrømning i befolkningen?
Ragnhild skriver bok basert på ungdommenes tekster samt intervjuer hun har gjort i perioden 2022-2025. På biblioteket vil hun lese noen utdrag og fortelle om hva hun har forstått så langt. Kanskje har du et annet perspektiv? Ta turen innom og bli med i samtalen.

What is it like for youth to live in Longyearbyen when so many people come and go?
Over the past three years, Ragnhild Bjørnsen has been conducting a research project exploring how mobility affects young people growing up in Longyearbyen. In this talk, she will share some of her findings and invite feedback from the audience. The evening will conclude with an open conversation on themes such as friendship, belonging, inclusion, and exclusion.
Ragnhild is an Associate Professor at the University of Inland Norway. Her earlier research has focused on children and youth who move frequently, including the children of diplomats. In 2022, a youth social worker from Longyearbyen contacted her about the challenges local teenagers face due to the community’s high population turnover. Since then, Ragnhild has visited Longyearbyen four times, and her project has continued to evolve.
Students at Longyearbyen School have contributed by writing texts about their everyday lives: What experiences do they share? What thoughts occupy them? How do friendships form and change in a small, transient community where many residents only stay for a short time?
Ragnhild is now writing a book based on the youths’ texts and her interviews conducted between 2022 and 2025. At the event, she will read selected excerpts and share insights from her research so far. Perhaps you see things differently? Come by and join the conversation.
