In Residence: January - March 2027
Marieke ten Berge is an artist and children's book illustrator based in the Netherlands, though she is often found further north. Working across a range of graphic techniques including etching, linocut, woodcut, and monoprint, her practice explores the relationship between landscape, storytelling, and place.
Much of ten Berge’s work is shaped by a long-standing connection to the Arctic. Through annual stays on Svalbard, sailing expeditions around Spitsbergen, and a deep affection for the region, she has developed an artistic practice that serves as an ode to the archipelago’s frozen landscapes, shifting light, subtle colours, and ever-changing environmental conditions.
During her residency at Artica Svalbard, ten Berge will continue a community artwork initiated in 2025 in collaboration with Kirsty Banks, alongside leading a series of public workshops, including a new printmaking course and a family workshop. She will also undertake research for a new children's book about the Arctic, while continuing her ongoing Ice Diary project and a series of landscape studies inspired by her time in Svalbard.
