Marit Beate Kasin is a Norwegian journalist and non-fiction writer focusing on environmental issues, land use, and nature conservation. Since 2008 she has worked as a political reporter and led the investigative project Hytteparadokset, which examined the environmental consequences of Norway’s rapid cabin development.
Her most recent book, Naturparadokset (2024), explores the systemic drivers of nature loss in Norway and argues for ecological restoration and shared responsibility as pathways to new solutions. The book was nominated for the Brage Prize in 2024. Kasin combines an analytical approach with personal experience from life in the Valdres mountains, aiming to strengthen the role of nature in public debate.
During her residency at Artica Svalbard, Kasin will work on her current non-fiction project investigating the erosion of our relationship with nature. She will conduct interviews, collect local perspectives, and use Svalbard as a living case study of both vulnerability and resilience. The residency provides a unique opportunity to engage with the community and Arctic landscape, deepening her exploration of how disconnection from nature shapes the ecological crisis—and how this relationship might be repaired.
