Artica Svalbard Recognised as Active Member of Gallery Climate Coalition for 2024
Artica Svalbard has been formally recognised as a 2024 Active Member of the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC)—a global network working to reduce the environmental impact of the visual arts sector.
To achieve Active Member status, Artica was required to demonstrate tangible progress toward implementing environmentally responsible best practices, including emissions reporting, decarbonisation planning, and waste reduction—efforts that reflect the organisation’s long-term sustainability goals.
“We’re proud to be acknowledged as an Active Member of the Gallery Climate Coalition,” said Charlotte Hetherington, Director of Artica Svalbard. “Being based in the Arctic brings an acute awareness of the climate crisis, and this recognition reinforces our responsibility to lead by example within the international arts community.”
While Active Membership is not a claim of perfection, it signals Artica’s commitment to doing the work—assessing impact, setting targets grounded in science, and taking practical steps toward a more climate-conscious future. The organisation encourages peers across the arts sector to engage with the GCC’s resources and contribute to collective progress.
