Book Arts Workshop with Elize de Beer

Earlier this month, Artica Svalbard welcomed residents and members of the local community to a hands-on bookbinding workshop led by current resident Elize de Beer.

Participants explored the fundamentals of exposed spine bookbinding and hardcover accordion (concertina) bookbinding, learning techniques including paper folding, sewing page signatures, cover construction and binding assembly. Guided by Elize, each participant created their own handmade notebook while gaining an insight into the craftsmanship behind this traditional bookbinding method.

The workshops formed part of Elize's public programme during her residency at Artica Svalbard, offering an opportunity to slow down, work with their hands, and discover the creative possibilities of contemporary book arts.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an enjoyable and inspiring evening.
