Explore Artica Writings: Past Editions Available

As we prepare to launch Artica Writings 2026: 10th Anniversary Anthology, we’re looking back at some of the previous editions in the Artica Writings series and we still have copies available to share.

Artica Writings is Artica Svalbard’s publishing platform for diverse and independent voices. Through essays, conversations, photography, poetry and other forms of writing and artistic research, the series explores questions emerging from Svalbard and the wider Arctic, bringing together perspectives from artists, writers, researchers and members of our community.

Artica Writings 2024: Svalbard’s International Community

In 2024, Artica Writings focused on the personal stories of international residents living in Svalbard.

Unlike many Arctic regions, Svalbard has no Indigenous population, and its small population represents an extraordinary range of nationalities and backgrounds. Led by journalist Elida Høeg, known for her work on climate and migration, with photography by Ángel Valiente, the edition explores how international residents navigate life in Svalbard amid changing policies, questions of belonging and evolving cultural dynamics.

Copies are still available.

Artica Writings 2023: Food on Svalbard

In 2023, Artica Writings explored food and sustainability in Svalbard.

Accessing locally grown food in this remote Arctic archipelago presents significant challenges, with local food sources sparse and highly seasonal and much of what we eat arriving through long supply chains. At the same time, food is deeply connected to life in Svalbard — from hunting and foraging to questions of resilience, community and environmental impact.

Through a series of conversations and contributions, the edition considers what food sustainability might mean in this particular Arctic context.

Copies are still available.

Coming soon: Artica Writings 2026

Our next edition, Artica Writings 2026: 10th Anniversary Anthology, marks ten years of Artica Svalbard.

Returning to the original ethos of Artica Writings as a platform for diverse and independent voices, the anthology brings together newly commissioned contributions alongside selected works from our back catalogue. Ten essays, poems, letters, artworks and a recorded in-conversation reflect the encounters, residencies and collaborations that have shaped Artica over the past decade.

Several contributions are presented in the writers’ mother tongues, including French, Korean, Tenyidie, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish, foregrounding the linguistic and cultural diversity of Artica’s international community.

Artica Writings 2026 will be available from 20 October 2026.

Order a copy

If you’re in Svalbard, copies can be collected directly from the Artica Workshop for 100 NOK.

Due to Svalbard’s tax-free status, selling and shipping items internationally can be complex. We therefore offer our publications at no commercial value and ask readers outside Svalbard only to cover postage. Please note that some countries may still apply customs fees according to local regulations.

To request Artica Writings 2023, 2024 or, from 20 October, the new 2026 anniversary anthology, email books@articasvalbard.no and let us know which edition you would like. We’ll calculate the shipping cost based on your location.
