Kathy Sirico returns to Tarandus Field-Based Residency

We are delighted to welcome artist and poet Kathy Sirico back to Svalbard this summer to take part in the Tarandus Field-Based Residency.

Kathy and Tarandus Project Lead Samantha Huset Dwinnell departed Longyearbyen for the hike to the Tarandus field cabin, located approximately 40 km south of town. Over the coming weeks, they will be based alongside scientists carrying out long-term reindeer research, immersed in the High Arctic landscape.

Brooklyn-based artist and poet Kathy Sirico works across collage-based painting, stained-glass sculpture and mixed-media installation. Her practice explores relationships between humans and the more-than-human world, weaving together personal experience with scientific, mythological and poetic perspectives to reflect on ecological change.

During her residency, Kathy will continue her artistic and literary research on climate change in the Arctic. Through poetry, prose and works on paper, she will explore the lives of Svalbard's reindeer and the ecosystems they depend on, reflecting on the emotional and ecological connections between landscape, wildlife and the communities who study and care for them.
