Artica Svalbard Welcomes Siri Granum Carson, Professor of Applied Ethics at NTNU

Artica Svalbard is very pleased to welcome Siri Granum Carson to Longyearbyen as part of the collaborative residency project From the Mouths of the Caves, Listening to Hear Another Island’s Song.

Siri Granum Carson is Professor of Applied Ethics at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Her research specialises in business ethics and corporate social responsibility, with extensive experience in research ethics education. She has served on the National Research Committee for Natural Sciences and Technology (NENT) and led AFINO, Norway’s national network for responsible research and innovation, from 2019 to 2024. From 2020 to 2024, she was also Director of NTNU Ocean, strengthening cross-disciplinary collaboration around ocean research and policy.

She holds several national and international roles within ocean research, including serving as chair of the National Committee for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Her work focuses on how complex scientific and environmental knowledge can be translated into ethical reflection, decision-making, and broader public understanding.

During her time at Artica Svalbard, Siri will collaborate closely with artists Mhairi Killin and Floortje Zonneveld, contributing an ethical and philosophical perspective to a project that brings together art, sound, storytelling, and community engagement. Drawing inspiration from an ice cave in Svalbard and a sea cave on the Isle of Iona in Scotland, the project connects young people across island communities to explore shared oceanic systems, language, cultural identity, and the lived realities of climate change.

Siri’s participation strengthens the project’s dialogue between art, science, and ethics, and supports connections with research communities at NTNU and UNIS, helping to situate local experiences within wider national and international conversations about ocean responsibility and knowledge-sharing.

There will be a public presentation of the project during the Sun Festival. Dates and details to be announced shortly.
