The Ministry of Culture and the Fritt Ord Foundation have appointed a new board member for the Artica Svalbard Foundation, Susanne Kaluza, CEO of the House of Literature Foundation in Oslo.

In 2022, we have had the pleasure of welcoming 10 residents: Vibeke Koehler, Augustin Maurs, Susan Schuppli, Marianne Solberg, Erling Pedersen, Lene Therese Teigen, Ingrid Wildi Merino, Inma Herrera, Heehyun Jeong and Taciana Niadbaj.
It has been incredibly educational and exciting to get to know them and their artistic practice.

NAARCA, the Nordic Alliance of Artists' Residencies on Climate Action, is a three-year project bringing together residencies from six countries to collaborate on research, residencies, commissions, institutional change and education around climate action.

In September we hosted the live public symposium Return to Nature? The Transformation of a Post-Coal Mining Landscape. The event took place at The Arctic University of Norway, Academy of Arts, we will share the recorded version on the Artica website soon. We are very pleased to welcome Artica’s final resident this year, Taciana Niadbaj writer, poet, translator, human rights activist and the current president of PEN Belarus.

In Svalbard, I have been working together with the staff at Artica to find new ways for radical climate action in their organisation. I am also here to inspire Artica to adapt even more sustainable modes in their everyday operation.

In April this year Susan Schuppli an artist-researcher based in the UK, joined us for a residency. During her stay Schuppli produced the project COMMUNITY SATELLITE STATION a series of conversations with scientists and locals all of whom are involved in sending, receiving and listening to signals from Svalbard.
