New Field Notes: Yindi Chen — Encountering the North
We are pleased to share a new instalment of Field Notes by current resident Yindi Chen.
In Encountering the North, Yindi reflects on her experiences of Svalbard through its shifting light, wildlife, histories of whaling and extraction, and traces of human activity embedded in the landscape. Moving between encounters with whales, former whaling stations, graves, industrial remains and fossils, the text considers how Svalbard’s landscape resists fixed boundaries and reveals connections between human history, more-than-human life and geological time.
Yindi is currently in residence at Artica Svalbard alongside Jun Zhang, nominated through the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA).

Yindi Chen is a curator and writer whose research, informed by queer ecology, examines cultural representations of nature and speculates on entangled relations between more-than-humans. She has curated exhibitions at MACA Art Center (Beijing), Yamanaka Suplex (Osaka), and Subtitled (New York), among others. Her writing has appeared in The Art Newspaper China, ArtReview, Cultbytes, C-print Journal, and Whitehot Magazine. She is co-founder of countercurrent, a publication dedicated to uncovering independent art spaces operating beyond the mainstream.
